Hi, I'm Christopher Rice

Hi, I'm Christopher Rice

I'm the Founder and Managing Partner of Refuturing, where I lead foresight, strategy, and research. As a consulting futurist and technologist, I explore the intersections of technology, education, climate, community economic development, and politics. Over the past 25+ years, I've worked with leaders at colleges and universities, foundations, community development organizations, industry & professional associations, and governments to rethink unspoken assumptions, reframe problems and challenges, reimagine possible futures and develop actionable strategies to achieve them. I write and speak on a wide variety of topics, including Alternative Tech Futures (and Their Retro Pasts), Artificial Intelligence and its Socio-Environmental Impacts, Anticipating a World in Climate Breakdown, Systems Thinking and Strategic Foresight, and the Futures of Postsecondary Education.

I also work with a small portfolio of higher education clients as an advisor on technology selection and implementation (including AI, blockchain, SIS, and learning technologies), building modern online program capabilities, and student experience analysis & design. Space is limited for these engagements, but please reach out if you'd like to consider collaborating in these areas.

Over the years, I've been privileged to serve clients like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNESCO, Salesforce, Arizona State University, University of California San Diego, the University of Miami, Texas A&M University, the Foundation for the Carolinas, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, the Larger Community Foundations (LCF), and other fine future-forward organizations.

Prior to founding Refuturing, I was the Director of Digital Learning Design & Analytics at the Institute for Transformational Learning (Tux) at the University of Texas System, an Enterprise Architect at the University of California San Diego, a Partner with Experience Design Works, Associate Director of the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT), and Research Director at the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center.

A Kentuckian born and raised, I currently reside in the Weird-for-Kentucky city of Louisville. When given the opportunity, I will talk your ear off about bourbon and the craft of songwriting. You can find out more about me at here at refuturing.com, subscribe to my newsletter Bad Futures, or follow me over at Bluesky under @badfutures.com.
